What have we learnt from the recent floods?

We have been out in the local communities to help in the aftermath of the recent flooding across Richmondshire. Here, we share some advice based on what we’ve seen and experienced over the past few weeks.

  1. Working with a broker is key

The true test of insurance is what happens when it comes to making a claim. The recent floods have highlighted to us, once again, the value of using an insurance broker to arrange your home and contents insurance. We explain the covers, their importance, and their benefits to you, allowing you to make an informed decision about the cover you want to take out. This helps to avoid any unexpected and unwanted surprises in the event of a claim.

Not only this, when it comes to making a claim, having an independent insurance specialist working on your behalf helps to ensure you receive as fast and fair a settlement as possible.

  1. Loss recovery insurance is a must in flood-prone zones

Loss recovery insurance can provide unlimited advice in the event of a large claim, giving you expert independent support to get things back to normal as soon as possible. A Loss Adjuster will take swift action to assess your loss, before negotiating with insurers to ensure you get the settlement you should. Another professional in your corner when the worst happens helps you to start taking remedial action as soon as possible.

  1. Contents cover is SO important

Whilst helping property owners in the local area throughout the recent flooding, we have seen an unsettling number of tenants without contents cover. This is highly recommended for anyone but for those in a flood-prone area, is even more essential. When your home is under water, the last thing you want to realise is that you’ve not only lost your home but all your beloved belongings. Make sure you arrange contents cover to help replace your items in the event of a flood.

  1. Be prepared!

Should your locality be under a weather warning, there are some simple things you can do to prepare yourself and your property. The government website offers some simple guidance at www.gov.uk/prepare-for-flooding. Although some damage will be unavoidable, there are some simple steps you can take to help reduce the impact of a flood; any reduction in the havoc caused by extreme weather is beneficial!

  1. Your community is invaluable

Throughout the floods we have been overwhelmed by how our local communities have pulled together. We have attended several emergency flood meetings organised by various parishes and councils across Richmondshire, offering our services and advice to both clients and those insured elsewhere. Thomas Jones, one of McClarrons’ Richmond-based Account Executives, commented:

“We have seen some devastating scenes whilst helping to clear up and assess people’s losses but it has been heart-warming to see the local community pull together in people’s time of need. As a local broker, this is exactly when we come into our own – getting out and helping people get things back to normal.”
