McClarrons hold Cyber Crime seminars for Rural Businesses

Due to the success of McClarrons’ Cyber Crime seminar at The Great Yorkshire Show earlier in the year, we have planned additional seminars which we would like to invite you to.

We will be holding two seminars in collaboration with Yorkshire Agricultural Society to warn rural businesses and farmers of the risks of cyber crime.

There has been a significant change in the way that crime is carried out, rather than criminals having to be face to face with their victims, they are now able to do it anonymously behind a computer screen or over the phone. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) announced that nearly 6 million fraud and cyber crimes were committed in England and Wales last year alone, making fraud the most reported offence during last year.

Steven Swift, McClarrons’ Development Manager, said of the upcoming events: “We are receiving more and more enquiries from clients wanting to know about the cover available for both crime and the risks of cyber crime; having spent the past 6 months researching this very specialist area of risk, we feel it is vital to educate individuals and businesses on the threats and the preventative measures they can put in place.”

Whilst the rural community may not seem like the most likely target for cyber criminals, there has actually been evidence to suggest that they are a target. Firstly, due to the large BPS payments they receive, as well as online fraudsters being able to use Defra data to help them carry out their crimes. All of this, along with farmers increasingly moving to online banking and carrying out more transactions in this way, including their CAP applications, they are actually considered a promising target for criminals.

The informal talks will offer an insight into fraud and cyber crime with speakers from North Yorkshire Rural Taskforce, a discussion of the preventative measures and protection available by Steven Swift and finally Gary Gallen, CEO and founder of law firm rradar and one of the country’s top criminal and regulatory lawyers, who will speak about the legal implications.

Refreshments will be provided and the seminars will run from 7.30-9.30pm on:

  • Tuesday 29th November at Rabbit Hill Country Store, Great North Road, Arkendale, HG5 0FF
  • Thursday 8th December at Malton & Norton Golf Club, Welham Road, Norton, YO17 9QE
