Hard Wiring and PAT Testing

Hard Wiring Testing

Otherwise known as “fixed wire testing” or an “EICR”, Hard wiring tests are a legal requirement in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. These fall under the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 and were set out to make sure that precautions are taken ‘against the risk of death or injury from electricity in work activities.’
To comply with these regulations, Churches, village halls, community centres etc. should have their electrical wiring tested at least every 5 years. These tests should be carried out by an electrically competent person such as a registered electrician.

Portable Appliance Testing

Unlike Hard Wiring Testing, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is not a legal requirement. It is however, a legal requirement for you to ensure that ‘any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition.’ A portable appliance is any electrical appliance that has a plug, regardless of whether you move it regularly or consider it to be “portable.”
Portable Appliance Testing is the best way to ensure that your equipment is safe for use. Here at Edwards Insurance Brokers we recommend that all of your portable appliances should be tested every year by an electrically competent person. Many registered electricians will carry out Portable Appliance Testing for you.
