When it comes to cutting the grass in your church grounds, ride on mowers are a useful tool, especially when you have a vast area to mow. However, there are some important things to consider when using such a valuable piece of kit, including whether your Church insurance will cover its use!
What is covered?
In most instances, your church insurance policy will cover property damage and liabilities for the use of a ride on lawn mower on the Church’s private land. However, there are instances where your insurance policy would not respond to a claim involving your lawn mower.
What isn’t covered?
The main instance in which your ride-on lawn mower would not be covered by your Church Insurance policy, is if you choose to drive and use your mower in any public place or on a public highway. This includes roads and even grass verges on pavements and public footpaths.
A good example of when this would apply, is if you were required to transport your mower from one private site to another. Your insurance policy would not respond if the mower was involved in an incident whilst being driven on a public highway for any part of that journey.
Other things you should know
Falling within the definition of a ‘mechanically propelled vehicle’, if driven on the road, a ride-on lawn mower requires the driver to have a valid driving licence which specifies they are able to drive a category K vehicle. The mower will also need motor insurance and to be registered with the DVLA as a road going vehicle.
